Economics Intent
We aim to create the very best Economics and Business studies students. The aim of the Economics curriculum is to develop students’ understanding of how the local / national / global economy works through analysing economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life.
The aim of the Business studies curriculum is to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and skills needed to develop their employability and identify business problems and opportunities.
We do this by quality teaching which ensures students understand underlying Economic and Business theory which students apply to a variety of familiar and unfamiliar case studies. We want students to be able to think analytically, reach logical conclusions based on data, and make judgements on future changes to markets and the economy.
Students are constantly challenged to work collaboratively and independently when engaging in all lessons and class activities. Through teacher modelling, we encourage our students to demonstrate manners, respect and tolerance in Economics and Business studies lessons. This allows students to express themselves in a confident manner. Lesson materials are engaging to promote discussion and encourage students to develop an enquiring mind.
As a knowledge-based curriculum, we believe that knowledge underpins and enables the application of skills. Content is delivered to students and then built upon through a variety of practice questions, with regular quality feedback being given to support student progress. The knowledge acquired then allows students to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills.
Students undertake their work, whilst developing an increased understanding into current events happening globally. They are encouraged to have broad minds and an interest in global affairs. We ensure the level of challenge is high enough for the most able, with scaffold and support available for students who need it.

This web page offers advice on how to prepare for examinations, both mentally and physically. It also explains the special arrangements for the 2022 series of examinations. If you are a parent, it looks at ways that you can help your son/daughter through this stressful period. It also offers links to resources for each individual subject on our Firefly pages.

Chellaston Academy is delighted to report, once again, outstanding achievements by its students in their post-16 qualifications this summer.
Chellaston Academy Headteacher, Ryan Metters, said: “We are immensely proud of all the achievements of our students, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year. They have earned their grades through exceptional resilience, incredible hard work, and total commitment to their studies. Our teachers have worked tirelessly, with great expertise and trust, to ensure students are all able to progress onto their chosen courses and destinations, including degree apprenticeships, university courses, and the world of work. We wish each and every one of them the very best and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.”
A total of 13 students achieved the very highest grades in each subject that they studied. For example, Matthew Bojarski secured Biology A*, Chemistry A* and Maths A* and will undertake a degree in Medicine at the University of Bristol. Annalyse Buchan secured top grades in Fine Art A* and BTEC Art Double Award Distinction* and will go on to study Photography at the University of Derby. Sophie Bayliss achieved top grades in Business A*, Economics A*, Maths A* and BTEC IT Distinction* and will study Business and Management at the University of York.

Our commitment and care to the whole child is underpinned by a strong partnership between teachers, students, and parents/carers. This partnership has been invaluable in both securing academic success and supporting the health and wellbeing of each young person as we have navigated a global pandemic.
Edward Moore, Assistant Headteacher Head of Sixth Form, Chellaston Academy stated that “We are incredibly proud of our Year 13 students and the way they have approached their studies over past two years, in what have been enormously challenging circumstances. We are absolutely delighted that their hard work and dedication has paid off. We wish them all the best on whatever path they have chosen.”
Sandra Fletcher, Chair of Governors, at Chellaston Academy also said that “The results achieved by the students are testament to hard work and effort of the staff and students at Chellaston Academy working closely together to achieve success. We are thrilled with how they have performed and wish every student the best for the next step in their lives.”

Politics Intent
The Politics department was established in 2011 when a politically enthusiastic group of Year 11 student’s requested for the subject to be offered at A-level. With healthy class numbers and an increased profile of the subject through whole-school assemblies, it couldn’t be a better time to study Politics at Chellaston!
A-Level Politics
There has never been a more interesting time to study Politics. In 2010 the UK saw the first peace time Coalition Government since World War II in Britain. In May 2015 the Conservatives stormed to a surprise victory and majority government. The ever present big debate over how to solve the current government deficit, global conflicts, and the immigration /EU membership political stories dominate the news headlines on a daily basis. The first unit of A-Level Politics will enable you to gain a deep understanding of how politics in the UK operates. In the second unit, the focus will be shifted onto US Politics, as you assess the current Trump Administration and the constitutional differences with the UK.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered through mainly classroom based learning but through varied teaching activities.
There will also be opportunities to get involved in political trips to further enhance your understanding of the course.
Is this course for me?
If you care about how your country is run, how you can afford to live, how much tax you pay as you begin to work then yes!
The Government & Politics A-Level Course will encourage students to:
• Develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes
• Acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom, and how these may differ from those of other political systems
• Acquire knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual and encourage an interest in, and engagement with, contemporary politics.
What will I study?
Paper 1 – Government & Politics of the UK
• Ten sub topics that are:
• British Constitution, Parliament, The Prime Minister & the Cabinet, the Judiciary, Devolution, Democracy, elections and referendums, Political parties, Pressure groups and the EU.
Paper 2 – Government & politics of the USA
• The US Constitution, Congress, The President, The Supreme Court, the electoral process and direct democracy, US Political Parties, Pressure groups and civil rights.
Paper 3 – Political ideas
• We examine the four following ideologies:
• Liberalism
• Socialism
• Conservatism
• Feminism
What will I need?
You will need to purchase a text book and provide a file to keep your work organised.
Assessment
You will sit three exams during the at the end of year 13.
These exams are all 2 hours long and have equl marking (33.3%)
Careers
The A-Level Politics course is an ideal complement to those who also wish to do History, Philosophy and Ethics (RE), Sociology, Economics and Psychology at A level. This A level gives an excellent foundation to those who wish to pursue Politics, Law, Economics, Philosophy or History to degree level and those who wish to make their careers in the legal, journalistic, political or business worlds.
Students of Politics are excellent analysts and have a good ability to weigh up arguments, which is why graduates are highly sought after in a variety of sectors such as the civil service, political research, private firms, law, accountancy, journalism and banking.
