A very warm welcome to our new Year 12 students and a warm welcome back to everyone joining us in Year 13. We are delighted to have you as part of Chellaston Academy Sixth Form.

The next two years will be exciting, rewarding and sometimes challenging. You will explore your chosen subjects in greater depth, take on new responsibilities and develop skills that will prepare you for life beyond school. There will be plenty of opportunities to grow in confidence, try new things and discover what you are capable of achieving.

One of the most important skills you will develop is the ability to learn independently. Your lessons are only one part of your Sixth Form experience, so the way you use your time outside the classroom can make a BIG difference. Wider reading, regular practice and careful preparation will deepen your understanding and help you apply your knowledge with confidence.

The students who make the strongest progress are usually those who take an active role in their learning. You will not be expected to master this immediately. Becoming an independent learner takes time, and this booklet is here to help you build effective habits, find strategies that work for you and reflect on your progress.

Whatever your ambitions may be, your time at Chellaston Academy is an important step towards achieving them. Make the most of every opportunity, ask for help when you need it and be proud of the progress you make along the way.
